An older man with gray hair and glasses, representing research clusters, wears a light blue shirt and a large medallion necklace, raising his right hand and pointing with his index finger against a plain blue background.

The Willson Center’s eHistory Research Cluster, the department of history, and the Institute of Native American Studies presented a conversation with cluster co-director Claudio Saunt, Russell Professor of American History and Regents’ Professor at UGA; Brett Riggs, Sequoyah Distinguished Professor of Cherokee Studies at Western Carolina University; and Tom Belt, cultural advisor and Cherokee language instructor (Cherokee Nation, pictured), introduced by Constance Owl, Presidential Scholar in the UGA department of history (Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians). The conversation engaged with materials from Saunt’s recently launched nativeground.org, an ongoing, multiyear eHistory project to map the Cherokee Nation in the 1830s.

Research Clusters

The Willson Center’s Research Clusters support groups of faculty who are organized to address large-scale humanities and arts questions through interdisciplinary partnerships. The program is designed to build research capacity in the humanities and arts and increase the profile and competitiveness of faculty for grants and support.
